Best Coffee Carafe
Looking for a new coffee carafe? Whether your old carafe broke or you’re looking to upgrade to a thermal carafe, shopping for just the right one can be a bit of a challenge. Replacement carafes will need to fit in your specific machine, while thermal carafes can be manually filled. Which is the best coffee carafe for you? Let’s review four of the top-rated carafes and decanters and see how they stack up.
Finding the best coffee carafe for you primarily comes down to two areas, design and how long you need to keep a drink warm for

BUNN 12-Cup Decanter
Classic Espresso Machine
- Industry leader
- No frills
- Watch out for version
When it comes to commercial coffee makers, Bunn has long been one of the leaders in the industry. This replacement decanter has the familiar feel of the local diner, while being compatible with some Bunn home coffee makers as well. These decanters fit well under the coffee makers used in many offices, too – just make sure you message the seller you’re buying from to verify which model will be shipped out. Unfortunately, there are many different items listed underneath the same Amazon ASIN, which may cause an issue with your order if you don’t verify things first.
It’s important to note that, while Bunn makes a large variety of coffee makers, their carafes are not designed to be used in any machine other than the one it’s designed for. There are a number of models which share the same carafe design, but you will need to verify that the model you own is compatible with the carafe you’re ordering. There is a reason Bunn coffee makers are so popular, though – their parts do everything they’re supposed to do, without any unnecessary frills. If you’re looking to replace your Bunn carafe, there is no better choice.
Moving now to non-specific and supplementary carafes, this vacuum-insulated stainless steel carafe is a great choice for those who just want to keep their coffee off the hot plate. Thermos has a reputation for keeping food and drinks hot or cold for hours – so they’re an obvious choice when it comes to thermal insulated containers. Unfortunately, they don’t have as strong of a reputation with their pouring mechanisms, and this carafe is no exception – the pour spout dribbles, and the screw-top isn’t very ergonomically designed. If you’re looking to keep your coffee respectably hot for up to 8 hours, though, there is no substitute.
Aside from the lack of grip, it also has a tendency to hold onto coffee tastes. This isn’t a big deal if you’re making another pot right away, but after a few days of daily use (and thorough cleaning in between) your coffee may start to taste a bit stale. We found that giving the carafe a weekly cleaning with home-brewing cleaners, such as Five Star PBW [ASIN B0064O7XBA], took the stale taste out – but be advised it will be back again soon. All in all, if you need something that will keep your coffee hot for a long time, and don’t mind a little extra maintenance, this carafe is sure to please. Best of all, they offer four different sizes to meet the needs of every coffee lover. (Their largest size will hold an entire 10-cup/5-oz.-each pot of coffee.)
Those looking for a Thermos-style alternative, the Tiger Thermal Carafe comes in four different sizes, perfect for all coffee lovers, and also boasts a price that’s just a bit lower than Thermos at the time of this review. (The price may have changed since then – please let us know if you find any discrepancies.) The smooth, satiny finish on the stainless steel exterior resists stains, and the glass inner liner resists lingering tastes and smells. It is a little more fragile, due to the glass liner, but with care, this carafe is an excellent choice.
Cleaning this carafe is incredibly simple – just give it a rinse daily with hot water, and occasionally scrub with baking soda and a soft bottle brush. When preheated, it can keep coffee over 145 degrees F for up to a full day, and over 150 degrees F for the first 10 hours. This will, of course, depend on the temperature your coffee is brewed, as well as the temperature of the water you use to preheat the carafe.
If you have one of the old Keurig K2.0 brewers, this thermal carafe is an upgrade for the included carafe, offering better insulation and an intuitive design that works well with your Keurig. Of course, it’s only really helpful to those who have Keurig brewers, and only the models that are compatible with this carafe design. Users who want to keep their coffee hot for more than a few minutes will see this as an essential upgrade – and, while it isn’t the best thermal carafe out there, it is one of the best for brewing directly from your K2.0. (There is a newer version of the Keurig thermal carafe available, but we found it wasn’t as good as the old version.)
While this carafe appears to be stainless steel, it’s important to realize that the inner layer is plastic. This means that it won’t insulate as well as fully-stainless-steel models will, but it also means it can be produced at a lower price. It is a bit bulky for the actual capacity, but no more than the carafe that comes with the K2.0. All in all, this is the best choice for those who want to brew into a thermal carafe directly from their K2.0.
