Francis Francis X7.1 Iperespresso Machine
Illy has long been known as one of the leaders in home coffee makers, and their Francis Francis X7.1 machine has a unique look that is sure to delight. The proprietary pod system means no measuring and little waiting, with one-touch convenience for a single cup of espresso. The attached steam wand turns your gourmet espresso drinks into a café-style cappuccino experience, all from this futuristic-looking device.
While the design itself won’t compliment every décor, the machine uses Illy’s special “iperEspresso” pods, which make clean-up a breeze. In fact, the extraction process happens entirely within the pods, so the coffee never actually comes into contact with the machine. You will, of course, need to decalcify your machine periodically, but Illy has made the process as simple as making a cup of espresso.
All in all, this is a great beginner’s machine that yields a high-quality drink with minimal time invested – the pods simplify the brewing process as well as the clean-up time, and regular maintenance can keep it running optimally for years to come. The only downside is that the proprietary pods aren’t as widely available as other capsule brewers, but a quick search on Amazon will turn up multiple varieties to suit a wide range of preferences.
Breville ESP8XL Cafe Roma Stainless Espresso Maker
For those looking for a simple cappuccino maker with no frills or fancy features, the Breville Café Roma is a manual machine with an included milk frother that can perform just as well as the higher-end super-automatics – provided the customer takes the time to learn the machine.
As a manual machine, the learning curve is a bit steeper than with some of the more automated machines. However, as is often the case in culinary endeavors, the less automation involved in the process, the more customization you’ll be able to do. This particular model even comes with two standard-sized espresso cups and a frothing pitcher – everything you need to get started, besides the beans and water, of course.
Because this is a manual machine, you’ll find better results with the more experience you have, and this particular machine isn’t specifically targeted toward beginners. We think that those who are willing to get to know their Breville intimately will love their machine more the longer they own it.
The Keurig Rivo Cappuccino and Latte System
As one of the leaders in single-serve coffee makers, it makes sense that Keurig would put their hand into the world of espresso and cappuccino, too. The Keurig Rivo Cappuccino and Latte System uses full 15-bar pressure to brew a cappuccino, latte, or espresso with the convenience you’ve grown to expect from Keurig. But does this machine deliver the same café-style results as higher-end cappuccino makers?
In short, the Keurig Rivo works well, for what it is, and those who don’t want to go through the trouble of grinding and measuring their own coffee are sure to love this machine. It’s not going to create the premium drinks that you can get with a high-quality grinder and a manual machine, but it’s also not going to take the level of practice that these other machines will take.
It should be noted that the Keurig Rivo doesn’t take the standard Keurig K-Cups, so you will have to purchase different pods than the ones you may already have. The frothing cup isn’t the greatest, but it will get the job done if you don’t want to deal with a more sophisticated machine. If your primary goal is convenience, the Keurig Rivo can’t be beat.
DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine
ASIN B000N2YKQ0 – previously reviewed
The DeLonghi Magnifica is one of our favorite super-automatic espresso machines, as it will deliver consistently good results regardless of your experience level. The manual controls allow you to adjust the amount and grind of the coffee, as well as the amount of water run through in a single cycle. You will need to manually froth the milk, but the included steam wand works well and is easy to use. Practice will yield better results over time.
One of the most important things to realize with the DeLonghi Magnifica is that it’s not meant to be set up and then ignored – this machine will require regular maintenance to make sure it stays in good working order. When treated with care, you can expect the Magnifica to last years.
Unfortunately, DeLonghi is not known for their customer service skills, so if you are looking into this machine, we recommend purchasing through Amazon. While the good machines are great, there are some quality control issues which cause a small portion of machines to malfunction soon after purchase. Buying through Amazon gives you the comfort of Amazon’s customer service guarantee – simply return the defective product and receive a new one.
Our Pick for Best Overall: DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica
Even with the portion of DeLonghi Magnifica machines that slipped past their quality control department, the vast majority of these machines are one of the most cost-effective super-automatic machines out there. The included milk frothing wand is reasonably good for built-in frothers, and the entire machine is easy to clean. You can’t beat the Magnifica’s quality for the price.
